According to family lore...
Anna Moriah Dobson and her husband, Alexander Axsom, bought a piece of land north of Cainsville and south (and across the road) from the farm of Hiram Hughes. They cleared this land some, and had some of the native timber cut into lumber. However, before they could build a house, Alexander died.
Anna went ahead and built a frame house and barn from this native lumber, all of which must have been hardwood. She later sold the farm.
Sometime around 1942, her grandson Kelly Hughes bought the same farm; it was here that he and his wife lived until shortly before his death in 1996. Kelly mentioned several times that the wood framing the walls must have been as hard as stone, and pointed out how the aged wood was incredibly difficult to pound a nail into.
At the time of this update (November 1, 2007), the house is still standing, a little worse for the wear of the past century or so. The barn leans a bit precariously and is a bit too close to the county road that was widened and moved in the 1960's. But the front and back porches have been replaced, the foundation has been repaired, the kitchen has been fixed up some, most of the yard gates have been rebuilt. Anna, we haven't forgotten your house!
